Why is it a problem to understand Gehinom as a process of cleansing instead of punishment? If it is a punishment gets the soul pure out of it? I understood this washmashine analogy from the Chabadnicks that one suffers and afterwards one is cleansed or more pure - the suffering is necessary in order to cleanse but dont ask me what from - Klipot? I am asking because I wonder, if we see Gehinom as a punishment what effect does it has on the soul besides suffering? And is one, if one doesnt end up in level 7, allowed to heaven afterwards?
