Am I—a man—allowed to go to a mixed gym if I go at a time when either nobody is there or only men go, assuming that I immediately leave if a woman happens to be there?
no because who says that you will pass the test when it arrives? as the Gemara in Bava Metzia says one who puts himself in the test, assuming he will pass it, is considered a Rasha and you don't sound like someone who is one or wants to be one.
